What to Expect at Blackhat USA - Day 2

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

Day 2

The second day of training is straightforward at an easy-going pace. Getting to and from the conference hall was very convenient. If you leave early enough, you have time to get breakfast. The breakfast includes some baked goods, which are easy to grab and go. There were three breaks during the day, with class starting at 9 am and going till 6 pm. Seperating it and getting a break roughly every 2 hours makes the day manageable.

As I mentioned, lunch it's a great time to network. If interested, you can get invited to many parties by just talking to people, including recruitment parties. There are many people from all over the world to meet as well. I enjoyed talking about the different work cultures. Talking with guys that work are Google and Bank of America, it was interesting to hear the various processes to get to conferences. Some companies have a streamlined process, while others require a lot of discretion from management.

The class covered most remote code execution for different languages on day two. I would have liked it if they had told us how often they see these types of attacks in the real world. They only mentioned it a few times for exploits rarely seen. I feel like this happens a lot in the cybersecurity field. Someone will talk about a specific type of exploit or attack, but it requires a massive oversight on a misconfiguration you will seldom see in real life. Sure, it sounds cool how easy it was to root to an account, but it's not helpful because they were using a seven-year-old version of apache running as the root user.

I mentioned parties, which mostly start on the 4th day of the conference after the training and when most of the vendors arrive. So it was a quiet evening going out for dinner on the vegas strip. Be prepared to have an expensive dinner and hope your travel department doesn't get mad at you. It's hard to find cheap food that isn't just greasy pizza. I went and got sushi by myself with a drink and ended up being nearly 80 dollars.
